In the past few decades, organisations have discovered something incredible; the principles that have been used to create enormous successes in large projects can be applied to projects of any size to create extraordinary success. As a result, many employees are expected to understand project management techniques and how to apply them to all projects.

This one-day course provides participants with the fundamentals of the entire project management process, as well as essential project management tools and techniques to guarantee projects are correctly led and executed from start to finish.

Topics Covered

Projects, project management, and project managers

Understand the importance of project management and the functions project managers are responsible for.

Identify process groups and knowledge areas as defined by the PMI

Understand the five process groups are the phases that projects go through from inception to completion; the nine knowledge areas are the different areas within the project such as risk, change, communication and more.

The triple constraint

Learn and understand the triple constraint: Time, scope and cost.

Project schedule by estimating time, costs, and resources

In this session, you will learn how to build out a schedule. A project schedule is a timetable that organises project tasks, activity durations, calendar start and end dates, and sets overall project milestones on a timeline.

Project planning documents, such as a schedule, risk management plan, and communication plan

Part of the nine knowledge areas. Each aspect has to have individual plans as each of them is vital information.

Establish and use baselines

A baseline in project management is a clearly defined starting point for your project plan. It is a fixed reference point to measure and compare your project’s progress against.

Perform basic management tasks

Understand how and when to complete all the tasks listed in the plan (leading status meetings, ensuring all documents are complete at the end of the project etc.)

Identify the importance of the PMBOK and PMI

Understanding the principles and importance of the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the governing body Project Management Industry (PMI) which this course has been built on

Project-needs assessment and goals, requirements, and deliverables

In this session, perform a project-needs assessment. It’s a systematic process for determining and addressing needs or gaps between current conditions and desired conditions or wants.

Key project documents

Every project needs a document as a guide to follow and adjust and to submit for approval. These include the statement of work, project planning worksheets, and a project charter. In this session, practice how to interpret, create and adhere to these documents.

Understand and use the work breakdown structure

Breaking work into smaller tasks is a common productivity technique that makes the work more manageable and approachable. For projects, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is the tool that utilises this technique and is one of the most crucial project management documents.

Use planning tools, including the Gantt chart, network diagram, and RACI chart

Understand how to interpret and utilise all the charts that you will use when planning a project.

Monitoring and maintenance

Understand how to monitor and maintain the project.
