‘Maybe your organisation has just had its Annual General Meeting or perhaps it’s looming. While the AGM is often a time to celebrate your organisation’s achievements it also often means replacing exiting board members.
Here are six tips that will help you find the people you need.

  1. Work out what skills you need. People with talents and qualifications in the areas of marketing, human resources, finance, legal or perhaps income generation will be useful
  2. Develop a list of people who you may wish to approach.
  3. When you make an approach, DO NOT ask them to help you out! That demeans your organisation. Instead, tell them a compelling story about how your organisation ’makes a difference’ and talk to them about how they can be involved too!
  4. Many people decline invitations to join NFP boards because they think they will be stuck there for life. Instead, talk about an initial one year commitment.
  5. Before offering a board position make sure they understand (and accept) where the organisation is headed and its strategy.
  6. Only invite people who you feel sure will be able to work in a team environment and that means talking to them about how meetings are conducted and decisions made. This is important!

Follow these tips and you should be able to recruit talented and motivated leaders!
